Rules are not a licence for opaque treatment. If giffgaff disconnects a number, it must explain why, provide a genuine human review, set out the PAC and refund routes, and allow a reasonable grace period. If the remaining credit cannot be returned, not one pound should be left trapped in the account.
A fair usage policy is not a blank cheque. You may enforce rules, but you may not bury key warnings in the small print at the point of sale, disconnect a number without meaningful review, and then scatter information about PACs, refunds, complaints and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) across obscure pages.
Initial activation or first use outside the UK, long-term roaming and the possible consequences must be stated prominently before a customer pays.
Permanent disconnection should happen only after a clear warning, proportionate restrictions and a genuine human review of the individual case.
Customers should not have to crowdsource urgent instructions. The notice must clearly state the steps, eligibility rules and deadlines.
Banking, verification and other important services cannot be moved instantly. A genuine grace period is essential.
If you refuse a refund, publish the rule, the exceptions and the remaining options. Do not cut off the service and leave the balance stranded in the account.
A number may be disconnected; the process must not be opaque. A policy may be enforced; customer credit must not simply disappear. A “final decision” does not erase the duty to explain.
Banking, email, messaging apps, two-factor authentication and long-term contacts can all fail at once. The harm goes far beyond mobile service.
Warnings, restrictions, human review and time to port are all possible. Abrupt disconnection simply dumps the cost and risk on the customer.
A refused refund, an unusable balance and no clear route forward do not amount to “case closed”. They amount to customer money left in limbo.
If giffgaff refuses a refund, offers no clear route for the remaining balance, and the SIM can still send chargeable texts, choose one of the charity text-donation routes below. The money should help real people—not sit uselessly in the account.
Donation is the last step—not a substitute for giffgaff fixing its opaque handling.
Recover whatever can be recovered. Do not surrender your rights simply because the provider calls its decision “final”.
Save emails, tickets and screenshots. Do not let “nobody explained it” become “you never asked”.
The buttons below open the SMS app with the number and keyword filled in. If sending fails, keep a screenshot of the error as further complaint evidence.
Save the sent message, the balance deduction and any confirmation. Every pound should have a visible destination—and giffgaff should see that customers will not accept credit disappearing without explanation.
The four options support different charities and causes. “Open SMS” fills in the short code and keyword; check both before sending.

Official text-donation termsThese services generally accept UK mobile numbers only. The donation will be deducted from PAYG credit or added to your bill, and your standard message rate may also apply. A UK number used while roaming abroad may incur additional network charges. Some MVNOs may not support every charity short code. Read the official terms on the relevant card before sending.
Provide a transparent, workable process with a clear route to accountability—or stop expecting customers to accept a dead number and stranded credit in silence. Recover the credit where possible. If recovery fails, donate it. Leave nothing in the black box.
